Proverbs 17:16
“Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?”
I remember the following summer after my high school graduation, I entered an ‘institution of higher learning’…. college. It seemed like the popular thing to do at the time. All of my friends were following the same trek. After all, my parents were very adamant that I would go to college.
My first quarter was for the most part pretty uneventful until I received my grades.. C,D & F; yep, you got it, academic probation at the end of my first quarter in college. Nothing to write home about for sure.
Having some 35-years to reflect on what went wrong; the problem was not with the school or the curriculum. The problem was me. I had gone through all the motion of setting myself up in college but had forgot the most important thing. My heart.
It’s kind of like the fool mentioned in the proverb…
“its senseless to pay tuition to educate a fool who has no heart for wisdom”
So I have always told my two boys, “I want you to go to college, and I will pay the tuition, but you must have the heart to apply yourself”. If you don’t, I won’t.
As a pastor of a small community church, I have noticed that there are many in both the church and in the world that have the same problem that I had my first quarter in college. You can share the word of God with an individual, but there is no guarantee, it will find the rich soil of ones heart.
I wonder if that is what God meant when He told Jeremiah that He would give His people an heart to know Him, that He is the LORD; and they shall be His people, and He will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart. Jeremiah 24:7
