For The Proverbial Palate, 05.31.2008

Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief. Proverbs 24:1-2

I think if we all are honest with each other, we will admit that we find some element of joy when we see a person that gets what they deserve.

Allow me to clarify my thoughts. It’s the individual that spends all of his/her time and energy conniving, scheming and working all sorts of wickedness to simply get ahead. To destroy the innocent that they may prosper brings absolutely no conviction. They work all all day long to lie, cheat and steal only to wake up one day and find that every thing they have sown, it is now time to reap.

Then the day of judgement comes. You get the picture. There is a smile that runs across our face and we say, yes!

There is something about seeing the prosperity of the wicked. In Psalm 73, the psalmist says “for I was envious at the foolish when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” It seems that in the midst of all of their dishonesty, “they are not in trouble as other men, neither are the plagued like other men”.

Not only are they prospering, they in essence are shaking their fist in the face of God when they, “set their mouth against the heavens and their tongue walketh through the earth.”

Solomon exhorts us not to be envious of them, neither be partakers of their wicked ways and wilful destruction. Solomon had set out to satisfy his heart with every pleasure that the material world can give and only found it vanity and emptiness.

In conclusion to the Ecclesiastes, King Solomon summed it up like this….

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

My friend walk in the integrity of thy heart and that illuminated by the Word of God. “For thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105
