For The Proverbial Palate- 06.07.2008

The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with. Proverbs 17:14

This proverb tells us that beginning a quarrel is like opening a floodgate or a dam. Before one releases a torrent of water with his tongue, we should drop the matter before the dispute breaks out.

In the epistle of James we are admonished to guard how we use our tongue. The word of God says the tongue is but a small member of the body but has the capability to cause massive destruction. Hence the best advise…”let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to wrath.” James 1:19

How many times has someone said something to embarrass or hurt us and in a moment, the tongue retaliates without any consideration for the potential destruction that will most certainly result with our response.

When the tongue is controlled by the flesh, generally one of two things happen. We build barriers or walls that become overwhelming obstacle in our relationships with others, thereby loosing all effectiveness in our witness for our Lord, or we have to go back and say we are sorry, to maintain a forgiving spirit and adequate testimony. The later is the only option.
