The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul. It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. Proverbs 20: 2-3
Last week in the ‘proverbial palate’, we saw the following truths concerning government, law and authority.
- God instituted government and authority for the purpose of good.
- Also that the society is to be subject to that power, rule and law.
- God will hold those in this position of power accountable.
Consider another translation- “The king’s fury is like a lion’s roar; to rouse his anger is to risk your life. Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling” New Living Translation
The word of God commands the believer not to render evil for evil and exhorts the him/her to live at peace with all men, as much as possible. [Rom12:17-18] Now we can see all over the persecuted world, that there are some people that the Christian can not live at peace with, no matter how hard one would try.
We are also exhorted to, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; but especially for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.[1 Tim2:1-2]
Now it is important to note that the passage extracted from Paul’s epistle to Timothy is not a ‘promise’ but an ‘exhortation’. the fact being that just because we pray for kings and those in a position of authority does not guarantee that we will not have to succumb to persecution. It is happening all over the world and kings and those in positions of authority are not allowing it, in some cases the source thereof.
But there are two promises from God’s word that I would like to leave you with…..
“Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.” [1Peter3:11-12]
“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” [Rom12:19]
